What Causes Triggered States

1. A trigger is similar to an ignition switch. A signal that initiates a swift mostly unconscious reaction that is characterized byfight or flight behaviors.

2. Any event, action, situation, comment, circumstance, or thought that evokes emotionally painful experiences is a trigger. A real, imagined, or anticipated loss of safety, security, positive regard, or well being will cause human beings to be triggered.

3. A trigger is a signal that there is something about the present moment that reminds us of what has been historically painful and not yet healed.
